About HostelObserver

Hi. I am Margarete, the founder of HostelObserver. And I started this blog to share my experience in becoming a hostel manager.

I love to learn and observe and share my experiences with my family and friends – so I thought bigger and now want to share what I learn with you.

I want to help other aspiring and dreaming hostel owners, managers and even staff to better run their own hostels. I want to help them avoid mistakes I made, like missing out on good instructions for a new staff member so they were overwhelmed – to the little life hacks such as that it is more important to have plates in the kitchen than forks for people to be able to eat.

I want to give you the insights from the front line of a hostel. No matter if you are in hospitality school and studying hotel management – or if you are a person who fell in love with hostels and does not know anything about this business. I want to give you free insights, inspiration, information and best practices from which you can learn – to open and take your hostel to the next level.

So whats my story:

After spending 7 years in the corporate and digital world I made my passion a reality and switched into hospitality.

I managed one of the biggest hostels in Germany.

I was available 24/7, had 40 people to recruit, onboard and train and in the meantime, I had to take care of inventory and waste while being there for every. single. guest.

So while I was busy running the hostel, I was looking for a resource that would help me make better, safer and faster decisions. Moreover, I was looking for inspiration about what other hostel executives do to motivate their staff and manage them fairly.

I never found such a resource that concentrated on hostels. So I created HostelObserver.

If you are a hostel owner, manager, staff or just hostel lover who wants to find inspiration and insights on how to manage a hostel, then this site is for you.
